Creative Writing

All novels, books and stories are published under the pseudonym 'Erik Hart'.

2011

In 2011, I just returned from Japan after teaching English for a year. While in Japan I had been working on a manuscript for a book and upon returning in Australia, I decided I wanted to become an author.

In the first 6 months I worked on a book called 'Demoncurse', my first full length novel in the genre of fantasy. I applied for a masters of creative writing at the Queensland University of Technology and started working on a manuscript called 'Martial Foundations', a martial arts manual focused on scientific principles.

DemonCurse (Fantasy Novel)

Demoncurse is a fantasy novel set in a medieval age with magic, demons and gods.

The main character in Demoncurse is Valeria, a mercenary, who teams up with a war priest Ulric to investigate a rumour of a mysterious artefact in the nearby city of Pinsk.

Demoncurse is a completed with a manuscript length of 80,000 words and was published online.

Martial Foundations (Non-Fiction Manual)

Martial Foundations was my thesis for my creative writing masters. The first half of martial foundations contained stories and writings about my start in the martial arts and the latter half, basic exercises and training drills that would introduce a reader to martial training.

Martial Foundations was well received by test readers and professionally edited. The final manuscript is around 20,000 words and is still a work in progress.

I plan to complete Martial Foundations in the future for publication. Draft version is published online.

Path to the Stars (Sci-fi Short Story)

Path to the Stars is a science fiction short story in the space opera genre, written while studying my masters. Path to the Stars would later evolve into Fleet Command, a video game set in space similar in aesthetic to Homeworld with ARPG gameplay.

Path to the Stars is 3000 words long and was edited and self-published online.

2012

I completed my master of creative writing in 2012. During this time I wrote a novella for the Vogel Literary Award titled 'Young Boy's Heart' and various short stories including 'Breakdown', 'Cycling' and 'The Case'.

Initially titled 'Young Boy's Heart', this story was set in an Australian school and followed the trials and tribulations of a young boy who had fallen in love with a girl in the class above him and his efforts to ask her out.

Young Boy's Heart is 30,000 words long and has been published online.

The novella was later rebranded for a Kickstarter campaign in 2017.

Breakdown is a short story set in Japan, which follows the story of cyclist who unexpectedly breaks down in a rural area and the challenge he faces repairing his bicycle and continuing on his journey.

Breakdown is around 3000 words and was published online.

2017

In 2017, I started writing again. I launched a kickstarter campaign for 'That time I got rejected three times on the same day!', a revised version of 'Young Boy's Heart' written in 2012. I also started writing two new novels, 'Triumvir' a coming of age fantasy novel and 'Balance Breakers', a science fiction novel.

Triumvir: Malediction (Science Fantasy)

I started Triumvir with the intention of writing a longer fantasy series with characters that grew and developed from book to book. The three main characters in the story start between the ages of 7 and 8, and are each guided by a mentor. With fast paced chapters (around 1000 words) and an act structure that is similar to plays, Triumvir is a unique literary experience.

Triumvir's setting has a mixture of fantasy and science fiction elements including steampunk, hard science fiction and high fantasy. The main themes are conflict of ideologies, racism and the impact of technology on societies.

The first book is expected to be around 90,000 words in length.

The first act of Triumvir has been published online.

Balance Breakers (Science Fiction)

Balance Breakers is my most recent writing project which deals with corporate corruption and environmental issues on a galactic scale. It follows a similar structure to Triumvir with fast paced chapters and three acts (around the length of a novella each).

The first book is expected to be around 70,000 words. It is still uncertain whether Balance Breakers will be a stand alone novel or part of a series.

The first chapters of Balance Breakers have been published online.

Fleet Tactical Command (Video Game)

FTC is a roguelike space simulation game set in a distant quadrant of the galaxy. The game has several story sections, each ranging between 300 and 2000 words due to branching options.

I wrote several short branching stories for the game. Examples are on the FTC page by following the title link.
